A noise is a noise when it annoys!

Use soft tones for feedback and harsh tones for emergencies. Auditory signals are responded to more quickly than visual ones and hence are effective for immediate alerts and warnings, when vision is poor or overburdened, or just for general reinforcement.

Stereo sound is now widely available and would contribute to the reality of the application.
